Trip Highlights

Trip Introduction

Mt Kanchenjunga Main is the world’s third highest peak after Everest and K2. Standing tall at height of 8,586m the pristine peak is situated at eastern Nepal bordering with Sikkim.  Kanchenjunga translates to “Five Treasures of Snow” in Tibetan and as the name suggests there are altogether five mountains namely Kanchenjunga 1 (8,586m); Kanchenjunga West (8,505m), Kanchenjunga South (8,494m) and Kangbachen (7,903m). The northern face route is known as the safest route although not the easiest. For Kanchenjunga South Expedition, the eastern face is regarded as the most difficult one.

The setting of Kanchenjunga is very remote and the first successful expedition was carried out only in 1955 by British Expedition team and the first people to reach the summit were  Joe Brown and George Band  of the same expedition.  Until 1949, Kanchenjunga was believed to be the highest peak in the world.

There are 4 known routes for climbing Kanchenjunga South. The southern and northern faces are more feasible whereas the eastern flank is very treacherous. Our expedition trip will begin from Taplejung from where we will trek towards base camp via Danda Gaon and Mitlung. Our route will be from Taplejung to Mamanke, Yamphudin, Tseram and Kanchenjunga Base Camp. We will end the expedition at Taplejung from where we will fly back to Kathmandu.

The ascent to the top of the mountain is challenging but also very interesting and gratifying. It is only suitable for mountaineers with years of experience and great physical and mental health state. The hardest part of the expedition is the climb to North Col which stretches for 500m of ice and rocks, where our experienced Sherpas will establish fixed rope route at altitude of 6,500m to 7,000m. There will be three camps known as Camp 1, Camp 2 and Camp 3 excluding the Kanchenjunga Base Camp at Yalung River. We will trek from Suketar (2,400m) to the base camp.

Spring (April and May) and autumn (October and November) are regarded as the best period for the expedition on the basis of weather condition and visibility. The expedition period is usually 54 days long and the climbing duration is about 30 to 32 days long. The group size has to be between 2 to 12 people.
